Thy Kingdom Come continued

Behold

Thy Kingdom come

The church should be waiting expectantly for His return. His kingdom is here, among us, now. But it’s also coming, to be revealed in all of its fulness. That’s the aspect of His kingdom’s coming that I want to look at today.

Jesus’ words are full of admonitions to be ready for His coming. Many of us this idea are reminded of this weekly as we take Communion. Yes, Communion is an act of remembrance on what God has done on our behalf through Jesus. But it’s something else too. As Paul writes, “Whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Cor. 11:26). Did you catch that? “Until he comes.” He’s coming back.

As I looked at verses dealing with the coming kingdom, I was struck by the emphasis on our behavior as we wait. Consider this example from 1 Thessalonians as Paul writes to the church in Thessalonica, “As you know, we comforted and consoled each of you as a father soothes his own children, encouraging you to live lives worthy of God—of the One calling you into His own kingdom and into His glory.” Over and over again, we’re adjured to live according to God’s precepts because of the kingdom. If you want to read more, you might conisder: 1 Thessalonians 2:9-12, 2 Thessalonians 1:3-12, 2 Timonthy 4:1-5, Hebrews 12:25-29 and/or 1 Peter 1:2-11.

Then there’s that verse in Luke 18 in which Jesus asks, “when the Son of Man returns, how many will he find on the earth who have faith?” Oh! I want to be found faithful. (I keep hearing Keith Green’s “I wanna be ready” in my head.)

Fulfilling my calling, living worthy of the kingdom… these ideas and the others in those verses are so weighty. So impossible. But I’m not called to do it in my own strength. Good thing since it isn’t possible!! Father, help me to yield and let you live your life in and through me. You’ve created us for good works you planned for us to do from before the beginning of time. Help me cooperate with you. Help us be ready.

With all the saints who have gone before, we say “Marana tha!” Come quickly, Lord Jesus.

The Hour

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father,” Mark 13:32. Tricia made this piece with the Once Upon a Time Deviant Scrap Collab, including pieces by Miss Behaving Workshop and Holliewood Studios.
